Former Trump adviser indicted for working with sanctioned Russian TV network

Dimitri Simes, a Russian-born US citizen and former Trump campaign adviser has been indicted by the US government on Thursday for working for a sanctioned Russian state television network and laundering the proceeds.

Indictments announced Thursday by the Department of Justice allege that Simes, a 76-year-old resident of Virginia, and his wife, Anastasia Simes, received over $1 million and additional perks from Russia’s Channel One in exchange for their services. Channel One was sanctioned by the US in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Simes, who ran a Washington-based think tank that advised Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, is believed to be currently residing in Russia. His wife, Anastasia, is also accused of receiving funds from a sanctioned Russian oligarch, Alexander Udodov.

If convicted, the Simes couple faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
