Flights suspended, diverted after drone sightings at Germany’s Munich Airport

German air traffic control restricted flight operations at 10.18 pm local time on Thursday and then suspended them completely. Flight tracking service Flightradar24 reported that the airport would stay closed until 4.59 am local time on Friday. The airport’s website listed the first arrival at 5.25 am and the first departure at 5.50 am.

Munich authorities had already closed Oktoberfest earlier this week after a bomb threat and police discovered explosives in a residential building in the city’s north.

Drone sightings disrupted flights last week in Denmark and Norway. Denmark has not named a suspect, but Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen suggested Russia could be behind the incidents.

European Union leaders agreed Wednesday to strengthen defences against Russian drones. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he would not fly drones over Denmark, Moscow denied any role in the incidents.

Over the past few weeks, airports in major European hubs, including Oslo and Copenhagen, were made to shut down and make large-scale diversions due to incidents of drone sightings.
