An Israeli drone captured the last moments of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in a building in Gaza as the mastermind of the deadly October 7 attacks on Israel last year swung a wood towards the drone before he was killed.

In a raw footage, being referred to as the last moments of Sinwar before he was eliminated, an injured Sinwar is seen sitting alone on a couch in the destroyed building. The video is posted by Lt Col Nadav Shoshani, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, on X.

Sinwar finally noticed that a drone was hovering near him and he tried to hit the device with a piece of wood but in vain as the Israeli military ordered a strike on the building, killing the Hamas leader and two other militants of the group.

IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari, who later addressed the media in Tel Aviv, narrated the ordeal and said that Israeli troops identified three “terrorists” running from house to house in the Tal El Sultan area of Rafah. He added that Sinwar was shot in his hand when he and two others fired upon the IDF soldiers and the Hamas leader took refuge in a building which was hit by Israeli troops.

Hagari, during the press briefing, played a video in which it was shown that Sinwar is being approached by an IDF drone, masked and with an injury to his hand. Sinwar was found with a gun and 40,000 shekels (£7,700), Hagari said, adding “He was running away and we killed him.”

In the end, the IDF soldiers fired a tank mortar shell which hit the building and killed Sinwar and other Hamas militants.

“To the people of Gaza, I have a simple message. This war can end tomorrow. It can end if Hamas lays down its arms and returns our hostages. Israel will guarantee the safety of all those who return our hostages,” said Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu in an address after Sinwar’s killing.
