After a thumping victory of Republican Donald Trump in the recently concluded US presidential elections, a report by Associated Press claims that entrepreneur Elon Musk’s super PAC spent around $200 million to help elect Trump, which signals how billionaires can influence elections.
As per the AP report, the world’s richest person and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Musk provided an enormous amount of money to the America PAC endorsing the Trump campaign which focused on low-propensity and first-time voters.
It wasn’t supposed to be a cakewalk for the America PAC to source the funding from Elon Musk but a ruling from Federal Election Commission in March paved way for super PACs to coordinate their canvassing efforts with campaigns, which allowed the Trump campaign to rely on the golden chance of hatching its financial backing via Musk route.
The Trump campaign then spent money on national ad campaigns to target demographics that Democrats controlled and dominated. The plan worked as the Trump campaign witnessed key turnout in seven battleground states, namely Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
President-elect Donald Trump, during his election night party in Florida announced, “We have a new star. A star is born — Elon!”
James Blair, Trump campaign’s political director in a statement said, “The FEC ruling cleared the way for us to gain more benefit from soft money enterprises that were going out and doing this work anyway. By conserving hard dollars, we were able to go wider and deeper on paid voter contact and advertising programs,” as reported by AP.
Musk is bound to be placed in charge of a new government efficiency commission, according to President-elect Donald Trump. He will play a vital role in Trump’s second term.
