Egypt is all set to host a global summit in the Red Sea resort in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday to finalise an agreement that deals with ending the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, and the peace summit is poised to be chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Reuters reported.

The international summit in Egypt’s Red Sea resort would take place on Monday afternoon “with the participation of leaders from more than 20 countries”, said the Egyptian presidency in a statement. The statement added that the summit aims “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security and stability.”

Among the notable attendees, the UN Secretary General António Guterres has said that he would attend the summit along with French President Emmanuel Macron, the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez have confirmed their attendance.

Though there has been no official confirmation whether Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will take part in the summit in Egypt on Monday. Hamas has issued a statement saying the militant group will not attend the summit.

Ahead of the summit, at least three Qatari diplomats were killed and two others were wounded in Egypt near the city of Sharm el-Sheikh as they were heading to the Red Sea resort, officials said. The diplomats were part of Qatar’s protocol team.

The summit in Egypt has been arranged after Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of ceasefire backed by US President Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza. The first phase includes a ceasefire, hostage release and Palestinian prisoners release by Israel.

More than 67,000 people have died in Palestine since Israel launched its counter-offensive against Gaza based Hamas for its terror attack in Israel on October 7, 2023 that killed 1,200 people and around 251 were taken hostages.
