Utah Valley University, where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot dead on Wednesday, has claimed that the suspect, Tyler Robinson, was an electrical student at a technical college.
According to a UVU spokesperson, the 22-year-old was a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in St. George, Utah.
Robinson, who was arrested on Thursday after a family member turned him over, had attended Utah State University for one semester in 2021, and also earned college credits through Utah Tech University while in high school from 2019 to 2021.
He was admitted to USU on a prestigious academic scholarship, according to a video of him reading his acceptance letter posted to a family member’s social media account.
According to the authorities, Robinson, who has two younger brothers, lived in a suburb of the city of St. George in southern Utah, which is a 3.5-hour drive from the Utah Valley University campus where Kirk was shot.
The Associated Press, citing a law enforcement official, reported that Robinson’s father recognised him from images released by authorities and encouraged him to turn himself in. He refused at first, but then changed his mind, according to the official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
His father reached out for help to a youth pastor, who helped Robinson turn himself in.
Following the revelation that Robinson was the suspect in one of the biggest political murders in the US in recent history, a heavy contingent of police was deployed outside his family’s house
Window coverings were drawn, and a pickup truck was parked in front of the home on the street, blocking access to the driveway.
Officers routinely warned people to stay off neighbors’ property, and both ends of the street were also blocked.
Meanwhile, a neighbor of the suspect’s family said Robinson was “smart,” “quiet” and “never caused any problems.”
“It was just a shock,” Kristin Schwiermann told NBC News. “I am shocked, very shocked.”
According to her she found out that Robinson was the suspect from her son.
“My son texted me and said, ‘Hey, this is Tyler Robinson that lives three doors down.’ And I’m like, ‘No, it can’t be.’ It’s shocking,” she said. “That’s not who’s in our neighborhood. I feel for his mom. … She’s a great mom, and he has a great dad.”
