Car crashes through front gate of Russian Consulate in Sydney, suspect arrested

The suspect, a 39-year-old man, was arrested and a 24-year-old constable was injured on his hand, the police statement said.

A car rammed through the front gates of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation building in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs on Monday and a person has been taken into custody, police said, Reuters reported quoting Sky News.

The reports added that the police operation was still underway. The incident occurred around 8am on Monday when police attended the address on Fullerton Street in Woollahra, when reports came in of an “unauthorised vehicle” parked in the driveway.

Pictures of the incident show the car rammed through the gates of the Russian consulate in Sydney, onto the grass outside the consulate building with one of its windows smashed and laying abandoned near a flagpole, reports stated.


New South Wales police said that officers responded immediately to reports of an unauthorised parking in the driveway of an address on Fullerton Street that was nearby the Russian Consulate.

Police added that as officers tried to speak to the driver of the vehicle, he drove the vehicle into the gates of the Russian Consulate.

The suspect, a 39-year-old man, was arrested and a 24-year-old constable was injured on his hand, the police statement added. Further details regarding the motive behind the crash haven’t been revealed by the police as the investigation continues.

“A 24-year-old constable sustained an injury to his hand and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics,” the statement said.
