Canada Federal Election Results 2025 LIVE Updates: Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election with 169 seats, and US President Donald Trump congratulated the Canadian PM over a telephonic conversation on the victory. However, Carney failed to cross the majority mark – 172 out of the House of Commons’ 343 seats – that would have allowed them to form the government without the support of any other smaller party. His Indian counterpart PM Narendra Modi, in a post on X, congratulated Carney on the win and said the two countries are “bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties.”

Carney hits out at Trump in victory speech: In his victory speech in Ottawa, Carney said the mutually beneficial system Canada and the US had shared since World War II had ended. “These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never … ever happen,” he said, stressing the importance of Canadian unity in the face of US’ threats. “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he added.

What Poilievre said on Conservatives’ loss: Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat to the Liberals and stated that his party would hold the government to account, Reuters reported. Poilievre, who failed to make the election a referendum on former PM Justin Trudeau, said: “We are cognizant of the fact that we didn’t get over the finish line yet”. His popularity is said to have declined toward the end of his decade in power as food and housing prices rose. “We know that change is needed, but change is hard to come by. It takes time,” he said,  speaking to supporters in Ottawa.

Canada Election 2025 LIVE Updates: Welcome to our live updates blog

Voting for the Canadian general election will be held in a few hours in a contest that has shifted in recent months. Once expected to be a straightforward Conservative victory, the race tightened as unexpected developments, particularly involving US President Donald Trump, changed the political conversation across the country. The main contenders are the Conservatives, aiming to end the Liberal Party’s decade-long rule. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who resigned earlier this year after low approval ratings, handed leadership to Mark Carney. The Liberals, now under Carney’s steady but untested leadership, have mounted an unexpectedly strong comeback. Initially, the Conservatives enjoyed a clear lead. However, Donald Trump’s annexation rhetoric and tariff threats against Canada altered voter sentiment. Trump’s aggressive stance caused widespread alarm, forcing Canadian voters to prioritise national unity and sovereignty over domestic grievances, changing the focus of the election.
