Canada on Monday listed the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, a move the Canadian government say will help fight crime targeting prominent members of India’s diaspora in the country.
The Bishnoi gang, which has presence across North India and countries including Canada and the US isled by its namesake leader, Lawrence Bishnoi, who hails form Fazilka district of Punjab.
Though Lawrence Bishnoi, who started his criminal career during his college days has been jailed since 2014, the gang continues to operate, unabated and is involved in extortion, arms and drugs trafficking, murders and more.
While Bishnoi continues to pull the strings form behind the bars, the gangs day-to-day activities are controlled by his close confidant, Goldy Brar, who is believed to be based in Canada.
The Bishnoi gang first came to national spotlight with the attempted murder of actor Salman Khan in 2018. The Bishnoi gang had claimed that they targeted Khan over the infamous blackbuck poaching case of 1998, as the Bishnoi community consider them as sacred animals.
The Bishnoi gang has since made several attempts on Khan’s life including in 2024, when shots were fired outside the actor’s Mumbai residence.
Maharashtra NCP leader Baba Siddiqui was also shot dead by the Bishnoi gang in October 2024, due to his close ties with Khan.
Another shocking crime, for which the Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility is the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer-politician Sidhu Moose Wala. Bishnoi gang claimed they killed Moose Wala to avenge the murder of an Akali Youth leader, Vicky Middukhera, in 2021, for which they blamed the singer.
The gang had also claimed responsibility for the killing of Karni Sena President Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi who was shot dead in Jaipur on 5 December 2023.
The Bishnoi gang is believed to have a network of over 700 shooters across India, most of them who are not directly liked. The gang operates by hiring local gangsters and hitmen who are paid to carry out one specific act, on behalf of Lawrence Bishnoi.
