At least five people were killed and two were injured in a mass shooting at a market in the Thai capital, Bangkok, on Monday, before the gunman took his own life, police confirmed in a statement cited by Reuters. The shooting took place at Or Tor Kor Market, a well-known venue for agricultural produce and local food. According to the police statement, all five victims killed were security guards stationed at the market.
No tourists were among the victims, Sanong Saengmani, a police official from Bangkok’s Bang Sue district, told Reuters.
The Erawan Emergency Medical Centre, which oversees hospital coordination in Bangkok, also confirmed the casualties.
Police shared video footage showing a suspect wearing a white hat and carrying a backpack slung across his chest walking through the market’s parking lot.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Gun violence and firearm ownership are not uncommon in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14-year-old suspect used a modified handgun to kill two people and injure five others at a luxury mall in central Bangkok. A year earlier, in one of the country’s deadliest massacres, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun-and-knife attack at a nursery in eastern Thailand.
