Physics Nobel Prize Winners 2025: Three US-based scientists — John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis — have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday.

“This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics has provided opportunities for developing the next generation of quantum technology, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers, and quantum sensors,” the committee said.

The trio will share the prize sum of 11 million Swedish crowns (around $1.2 million).

The Nobel Prizes, founded in the will of Alfred Nobel, have honoured excellence in science, literature, and peace since 1901, with economics added later. Physics — the first category listed in Nobel’s will — remains among the most prestigious.

Past laureates include Albert Einstein, Marie and Pierre Curie, Max Planck, and Niels Bohr, whose work laid the foundations of quantum theory.

Last year’s physics prize went to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for breakthroughs in machine learning that helped drive the artificial intelligence revolution.

The Nobel week continues with the chemistry prize on Wednesday, followed by peace on Friday. Laureates will receive their medals from the Swedish king at a December 10 ceremony in Stockholm, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
