An American Airlines flight returned to Las Vegas airport on Wednesday morning after flames and smoke was seen billowing from one of its engine midair, less than 10 minutes after takeoff. The plane landed safely and no injuries were reported, officials said.

The American Airlines flight 1665 took off from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on Wednesday at 8:11am (local time) for Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, North Carolina, as per flight tracking website Flightradar24.

The American Airlines flight returned to the Las Vegas airport at around 8:20am, according to US aviation watchdog Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The airline said that 153 passengers and six crew members were on board the aircraft at the time of incident. The plane, an Airbus A321, was taken out of service for proper evaluation. The FAA said that it will investigate the incident.

An airport spokesperson said smoke came from the left engine of the plane after takeoff. Videos posted on social media show flames and smoke coming from the engine of the American Airlines flight while it was in air.

However, American Airlines said that despite witnesses and videos suggesting there was smoke and flames coming from the engine, airline mechanics found no evidence of fire during an inspection of the flight after it returned to Las Vegas.

American Airlines, in a statement said, “The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power and customers deplaned normally. We appreciate the professionalism of our crew and thank our team who are working to get our customers to their destinations as quickly as possible,” CBS News reported.
