Two American police officers were wounded and a suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire as officers were responding to a call in Pennsylvania, authorities said, according to Associated Press.
The incident took place around 6:11 pm local time, when troopers responded to a reported theft at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Guilford Township, just outside Chambersburg, police said, CBS reported.
The troopers were taken to hospitals after Wednesday’s shooting, Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement. An update on their conditions would be made public later, the statement added, along with details about the incident and the suspects involved.
Governor Josh Shapiro said he and his wife, Lori, were praying for the officers and urged others to do the same.
“Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers are the very best of us — running towards danger every day to keep our communities safe,” Shapiro said in a post on the social platform X.
State police said there was no threat to the public, though “the scene remains very active.”
The shooting occurred in southern Franklin County, roughly 135 km northwest of Baltimore, AP reported.
