A helicopter crash in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula led to the disappearance of 22 people on board, out of which 17 bodies have been recovered by the rescuers and the wreckage of the chopper is also found.

Rescuers have found no survivors in the search as the Mi-8 helicopter crashed which disappeared shortly after taking off from a base near the Vachkazhets volcano in the Kamchatka peninsula.

The reason for the crash is still not detailed and the area which is known for its active volcanoes is a popular tourist destination. The helicopter crash had 19 tourists with 3 crew members on board.

The helicopter was being operated by Kamchatka-based Vityaz-aero. The Russian emergencies ministry has stated that the efforts to locate the remaining bodies is underway.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti quoted the Russian ministry that a possible reason for the crash could have been adverse weather and poor visibility.

“The wreckage of the previously missing helicopter was discovered from the air,” the Russian ministry said on Telegram, as reported by VOA News.

In August 2021, another Mi-8 helicopter crashed into a lake in Kamchatka when there was poor visibility which led to the death of 8 people out of 16 on board.
