The Syrian civil war has left many homeless including countless children who yearn for their childhood back home. Over 400,000 refugees have crossed the Mediterranean Sea via Greece, most of them travelling without belongings. The ones who carre are forced to throw them away.
In this video, produced by AJ+, one little girl talks about her journey to the Greek island of Lesbos.
“We suffered because they threw away all our belongings in the sea,” says the 7-year-old Malak, interviewed by UNICEF. “We were about to die and drown,” she adds.
If given a choice, none of them would undertake this journey. But to live in constant fear of being bombed does not leave much of a choice. When asked if she would like to go back, she promptly responds “I would love to go back but how shall we go again? I was happy there. God willing, we’ll be back like before.”
