One97 Communications Limited, the company that owns the popular digital payment platform Paytm recently announced that users can now make UPI payments at select locations outside of India.

Paytm says Indian travellers going to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan and Nepal will now be able to pay for shopping, dining and local experiences using the app. The functionality, which is disabled by default, requires users to do a “one-time activation” to link with the user’s bank account. If you forgot to set up international UPI payments, the app will automatically prompt the user to activate the feature.

If you want to manually enable the feature, tap on the search bar at the top, search for ‘International UPI’ and click on the result under the Services tab. On the screen that appears, Paytm will ask you to connect your UPI ID to make payments outside of India.

The company says depending on the trip duration, Paytm users will be able to choose a usage period from one to 90 days after which the service will be disabled for security purposes. Automatically disabling the functionality after a set time not only prevents accidental transactions but can also prevent scammers from duping users of their money.

Recently, Paytm unveiled a new feature that lets users download UPI statements to access detailed transaction records, enabling users to keep track of their spending and manage budgets. Earlier this year, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) ordered Paytm’s banking arm to stop accepting fresh deposits citing non-compliance.
