Nikon, on Wednesday, October 14, unveiled its latest camera Nikon ZR at the Broadcast India Show, marking its entry into the professional cinema market. The ZR, part of the Z CINEMA series, is a full-frame sensor camera designed for creators seeking advanced filmmaking capabilities. Priced at Rs 186,995, the Nikon ZR will be available at Nikon stores across India.

Developed in collaboration with RED Digital Cinema, a Nikon subsidiary, the ZR delivers cinematic excellence with internal 6K RAW recording. It incorporates RED’s advanced colour science, the R3D NE video codec, and professional-grade audio in a lightweight, durable body.

The ZR is the first Nikon camera to feature the RED R3D NE codec, supporting seven recording formats, including 12-bit RAW for exceptional tonal range and flexible post-production. It offers 6K/59.94p and 4K/119.88p 12-bit RAW recordings in REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10 profiles. Equipped with a 4.0-inch LCD, the ZR supports LUT monitoring for real-time previews, alongside waveform, histogram, and multi-colour zebra overlays.

For cinematic motion blur, it provides shutter angles from 5.6° to 360°. Its deep-learning autofocus detects up to nine subjects, including humans, animals, and vehicles, making it ideal for both live and narrative productions.

Weighing just 540 g, the Nikon ZR features a dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy body. It supports internal 6K RAW video recording in formats like R3D NE, N-RAW, and ProRes RAW HQ. A world-first, the ZR offers in-camera 32-bit float audio recording via a 3.5mm jack, enhanced by OZO Audio with five pickup patterns. It also enables direct cloud uploads to Frame.io via the NX MobileAir app. An advanced thermal management system ensures over two hours of continuous, silent recording without overheating.

The ZR includes studio-grade connectivity, such as full HDMI, USB-C, ON AIR/PREVIEW indicators, and HDMI-CEC tally light compatibility, ensuring seamless integration into multi-camera and live setups. Its built-in OZO Audio eliminates the need for external recorders, delivering broadcast-quality sound. The new digital accessory shoe pairs with the ME-D10 shotgun microphone, offering PURE and FOCUS modes for precise speech or natural ambience capture without batteries or cables.
