Improving upon a powerhouse like the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which features some of the best camera systems and snappiest performance around, sounds like a tall order, but Apple has actually managed to pull it off. The iPhone 15 Pro Max sees upgrades across the board – some more meaningful than others – and today, we take a look at how it stacks up against its predecessor. And whether it’s worth the extra bucks.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Build

Only a few grams short of weighing as much as a rock, the iPhone 14 Pro Max holds the title of being one of the heaviest non-foldable handsets around – if not the heaviest. Add to that the fact it features squarish edges, and you’ve got a handset that doesn’t go easy on your hands at all.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max addresses this complaint (to a degree) by bringing down the weight from 240 grams to 221 grams with its titanium chassis. The edges are now also contoured for a comfier grip. So if you’ve held off from purchasing the iPhone Pro Max models so far because of their sheer heft, it may be time to take a second look.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Charging

Apple has stubbornly held on to its inferior Lightning cable for ages, but pressure from the European Union may have finally made the company budge. The iPhone 15 series ditches the age-old tech for the speedier USB-C standard, bringing along 20x faster data transfer speeds of 10Gbps. But the biggest advantage is not having to carry a separate Lightning cable for your iPhone. Unfortunately, if you’re expecting faster charging speeds than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, that’s not the case.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Cameras

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is not a huge upgrade, but it has some notable improvements over the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The most noticeable one is the new 5x zoom lens, which uses a clever tetraprism design to achieve a 120mm focal length. It also features OIS and autofocus 3D sensor-shift for better stability and accuracy. This means you can zoom in much closer than the 3x zoom on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The main camera also gets a bigger sensor that can capture more light in tricky situations. It has the same 48MP resolution as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but takes sharper 24MP photos by default. The iPhone 14 Pro Max only takes 12MP photos normally. We haven’t seen any side-by-side comparisons yet, but these changes could make a big difference. There are some other cool features too, like smarter portrait mode that turns on automatically when it sees a face and a good background.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Action Button

The iPhone 15 Pro Max also changes the Mute Switch to an Action Button, which is more like a regular button than a switch. You can still use it to mute your phone, but you can also customise it for other things. The Action Button can let you quickly access things like the camera or flashlight on your phone. You can also use it to switch between Focus modes, turn on accessibility features or record a voice memo. The button works with the Shortcuts app on your phone for more options.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Processor

This is the most powerful chip ever made by Apple, and it could make the iPhone 15 Pro Max the best phone for gaming and AI. The A17 Pro is made with a 3nm process, which means it can fit more transistors and run faster and longer than the A16 Bionic in the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple says that the CPU is 10% faster and that the neural engine can do twice as many calculations per second. That means faster and smarter apps, photos and videos.

But the real star is the GPU, which has six cores and supports ray tracing. This is a technique that makes realistic lighting and shadows in 3D graphics, and it’s usually only found in high-end PCs and consoles. Apple says that the GPU is 20% faster and that it can handle console-quality games.

Which iPhone to buy?

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is clearly better than the iPhone 14 Pro Max in many ways, but it may not be worth it for everyone. If you want a phone that can also play amazing games, then the 15 Pro Max is the one for you with its huge performance boost in graphics. And of course, if you’ve always wanted a Pro Max but hated how heavy it was, then now is your chance – the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the lightest Pro Max ever.

But if you’re not too impressed by these upgrades, then you may not want to spend Rs 32K more for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which starts at Rs 1,59,900. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is still a great phone and it’s currently selling for Rs 1,27,999. But of course, if you’re considering an EMI purchase, the price difference may not feel as significant.
