India was among the few countries that had a good year in PC sales in 2015, according to silicon giant Intel. Giving a peek into prelim figures available with the chip maker, Sandeep Aurora – Director, Marketing & Market Development – Intel South Asia, told indianexpress.com that 2015 was significant because the 2-in-1 as a category finally got established during the year.

“In 2015, the 2-in-1 category was still niche. It will become more significant in coming months and contribute to a larger share,” he said without disclosing numbers. Intel has been pushing for the adoption of 2-in-1s, which are essentially tablet computers which come with keyboards to make them more productive. In India, they are also the most affordable form factor now with prices as low as Rs 12,999. Aurora was also optimistic about the compute stick, which can yoke to any screen and convert it into a PC, becoming more popular in the new year.

Intel is also working closely with the government to get non-urban India also on the computing bandwagon and is backing a project called Ek Kadam Unnati Ki Aur. “We believe Digital India will not be successful if we don’t get rural India also on board,” Aurora explained, adding that this was a big initiative working with the government, ecosystem and other stakeholders.

Aurora thinks ease of use and higher security will be the big trends in computing this year.

“Actionable smart city data will become real as we go forward,” he said, highlighting how digital surveillance and security will also come into focus as the smart city rollout happens across the country.
