Apple has dominated the wrist-worn device market for the last few years. However, a new report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) suggests that Huawei has surpassed the iPhone maker and secured the top spot in the global wrist-worn wearable market for the first three quarters of 2024.
The report goes on to say that in the third quarter of the year, the Huawei GT5 and the GT5 Pro as well as the second-generation blood pressure monitor Watch D2 contributed to most sales, with the company recording “continuous and stable growth” in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Middle East and Africa.
When Apple launched the Watch Series 10, it managed to briefly regain the top spot in the wrist-worn market in the third quarter of the year. And while the tech giant has managed to hold on to the top spot in the global smartwatch market, it looks like the tech giant needs to innovate and work to make the Apple Watch more appealing.
The third spot is secured by the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, with the company recording an impressive 26.5 per cent growth year over year. IDC says most of this growth can be attributed to the newly launched Xiaomi Band 9 and the Xiaomi Watch S series, which helped the company get some friction in the premium segment.
Samsung recently unveiled its seventh generation wrist-worn wearable devices, which helped the South Korean tech giant record a 24.3 per cent growth year over year. The company’s sales figures were further pushed by the Galaxy Fit 3 and the Galaxy Watch FE.
The fifth spot is secured by yet another Chinese company – BBK Electronics. While it mostly deals with smartwatches for kids, it looks like the company is also actively trying its hand in markets other than China.
The IDC report also states that China emerged as the largest market for wrist-worn devices, shipping 45.8 million units this year, which amounts to 20.1 per cent growth year over year. On the other hand, sales figures in India and the United States saw a decline compared to last year.
