“At the core of our actions is the drive to solve problems,” said Joe Staniforth, Head of Wearables Category at Dyson, during a company event. Staniforth was responding to a question enquiring about the inspiration behind inventing a headphone that doubles up as a mobile air purifier.

On October 4, Dyson Zone was officially launched in India, and Staniforth was in New Delhi to give a demonstration of the product. On the occasion, indianexpress.com caught up with Staniforth to understand the motivations behind the device and how it was going to impact Indian consumers.

The latest device features top-tier noise cancellation, 50-hour playback, and scientific sound precision for an unmatched listening experience. Below is the exclusive interaction with the engineer where he throws light on the company’s innovative approach to audio devices.

What inspired the creation of the Dyson Zone, combining both air purification and audio technology into one wearable?

Joe Staniforth: Globally, issues of noise and air pollution are on the rise. As more people move into cities, it leads to increased construction noise and greater traffic, further exacerbating these pollution problems. This is not just an environmental concern; it directly affects people’s health. Our inspiration comes from addressing and solving these critical challenges.

As someone who has worked across various geographies and product categories at Dyson, how do you see the global market responding to Dyson Zone, especially India?

Joe Staniforth: Solving problems for people is our primary goal. If we can enhance the quality of life for individuals, it’s a significant achievement. We address daily challenges faced by many, and the feedback we receive is overwhelmingly positive. This is because we genuinely improve aspects of their lives, and our efforts have been fruitful.

Globally, and especially in India, the challenges of noise and air pollution are intensifying. As India grows and flourishes, it faces heightened environmental concerns. At Dyson, when we design our products, we ensure they perform at the highest standards. Not only do we aim to protect our consumers in India, but we also extend this protection to other markets. We view these challenges as global issues, striving to make a difference for everyone involved.

Can you share something about the key challenges while conceptualising the Dyson Zone?

Joe Staniforth: Over the past six years, we have faced the challenge of condensing purification technology into a compact size for portability, ensuring it provides optimal airflow. Achieving this compactness, ensuring silence, and then integrating features like audio and active noise cancelling was a significant challenge. Combining all these features into a single product required us to challenge the norm and be bold as a company. After investing significant time and effort, we are proud to see the product’s reception in the market.
