Instagram recently released its 2024 Instagram Trend Talk report, giving us insights on Gen Z trends across the United Kingdom, United States, Brazil, India and South Korea.

Conducted in partnership with Worth Global Style Network (WGSN), the survey asked Gen Z about issues, topics and trends like fashion, beauty, dating, social media, friendships and more in the context of the upcoming year.

The report suggests that India is a trendsetter in various categories like fashion trends, beauty and food with Gen Z open to exploring emerging trends. From Ayurvedic to vegan products,  they are most excited about trying out new food.

In the upcoming year, the Gen Z population said they staying healthy, exploring career paths and travelling are among their top priorities. However, 43 per cent of respondents said they will focus more on their careers and invest in their personal growth and development in the coming year. Compared to other countries, Gen Z in India seems to believe that starting a business is the best way to generate wealth.

When questioned about how they use Instagram to get closer to someone, the top replies included liking other people’s stories, sending memes and reels in DMs and liking a post on their feed.

As for dating and friendships, 63 per cent said they are single and that strengthening their current relationships is their top priority. The top ways Gen Z flirts with people they like on Instagram is by liking their story, including them in their story or photo dump and adding them to their ‘Close friends’ list. Moreover,  almost a third of Gen Z respondents in India said ‘bad taste in memes’ was their top turn off.

Instagram’s Trend Talk 2024 report also suggests that 9 out of 10 Gen Zs in India consider themselves part of a fandom and that the country has the highest percentage of sports superfans compared to other regions in the survey. It also reveals that Indian Gen Z look forward to more relatable content in 2024 like life advice, ‘day-in-the-life-of’ and content about their profession.
