Modular smartphones are the next big thing. LG’s 2016 flagship, G5 is a fully functional modular smartphone, whose modules can be clipped on at the bottom. Now, Lenovo, at the Tech World 2016 in San Francisco unveiled Moto Z and Moto Z Force, semi-modular smartphones with replaceable back covers called MotoMods.
Lenovo Moto Z and Moto Z Force are different from LG G5, both in terms of design and functionality. Moto Z, Z Force don’t have a removable bottom part, instead the back covers act as modules.
The MotoMods can be snapped on to the smartphone, using 16 magnetic pins at the back of the device.
Imagine a smartphone that doesn’t only look aesthetically appealing, but also transforms in to a new device each time you snap on a back cover. This is what Lenovo is offering with Moto Z.
So, what exactly do these MotoMods do? Let us help you out with that:
Power Packs
So the first of the lot is Power Packs. The module looks sleek and can be snapped to the rear of Moto Z and Moto Z Force to add an extra 2,200mAh battery life. Motorola has partnered with Kate Spade New York, TUMI and Incipio to create fashionable designs for Power Packs.
JBL SoundBoost
Lenovo and JBL have created a Mod to to amplify the sound on these smartphone. JBL SoundBoost has two three-watt drivers, and a built-in 1,000mAh battery. The Mod transforms the smartphone into a speaker.
“Like an instant party maker with the JBL SoundBoost – it’s really, really loud,” says Motorola.
Moto Insta-Share projector
Moto Insta-Share projector is a 70-inch movie projector, which can be used to either beam images or videos on to any surface. Moto Insta-Share projector is the most bulky of the three modules, and comes with a slightly protruding unit. This one also looks has a built-in speaker.
Lenovo says the MotoMods are designed to work with future generations of Moto Z smartphones too.
