Meta is set to launch a new line of smart wearables at its annual Connect conference, including the company’s first pair of display-equipped smart glasses and a wristband that lets users control the device through hand movements.

According to CNBC, the glasses—codenamed Hypernova—will feature a small digital display built into the right lens. Expected to cost around $800, the device will be sold in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica. The launch follows last year’s Connect demo of Mark Zuckerberg’s experimental Orion AR glasses.

While Hypernova will include a colour display, its features will be limited, people familiar with the project said. With a field of view of roughly 20 degrees, the display will appear as a small, fixed window, mainly relaying basic information such as text notifications.

The accompanying wristband, powered by sEMG sensor technology, reads electrical signals from hand movements to control the glasses. Apple’s Vision Pro uses the same technology. Sources said Meta sees the wristband as a crucial stepping stone towards future, fully functional AR glasses.

However, the wristband has faced challenges in testing, including accuracy issues when worn loosely, performance differences between men and women, and problems when used with long sleeves. Developers have recently been invited to begin testing both Hypernova and the wristband.

Meta is also encouraging third-party developers, particularly those working with generative AI, to create apps for its wearable ecosystem.

In addition to Hypernova and the wristband, Meta is expected to announce a third-generation version of its voice-only smart glasses at Connect, developed in collaboration with Luxottica. A recent CBP filing described the device as “The Next Generation Smart Glasses,” featuring capacitive touch components for gesture-based interactions.
