Ever since Nintendo gave us a first look at Super Mario Bros Wonder during its Direct Showcase event last week, fans are already calling it the game of the year. After all, Mario Bros is the first-brand new 2D Mario game in over a decade. Coming this fall for Nintendo’s Switch console, Super Mario Bros Wonder will bring many new experiences, including the ability to turn Mario into an elephant.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new 2D side-scroller in the Mario universe.
The launch of Super Mario Bros Wonder brings 2D side-scrollers back into the limelight. The genre once dominated the gaming industry back in the 80s and 90s thanks to Nintendo and Sega but when 3D platformers started to gain prominence, old-school type side-scrollers saw a decline in popularity. Side-scrolling essentially refers to games that take place in a 2D environment where a side-angel camera is used for action viewing. Think about classic side-scrollers such as Contra and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. But it was Nintendo that helped revolutionize the side-scrolling genre with its Super Mario Bros, a game that introduced side-scrolling levels and power-ups. These days, side-scrollers aren’t as common as they used to be in the late 80s and early 90s. Nintendo has so far released only seven 2D Mario games in the mainline Super Mario series. The last 2D Mario game was New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe and it made its debut in 2012 for the Wii U console. Later, Nintendo repackaged the game for the Switch with extra added features.
Super Mario Bros Wonder is a return to the 2D side-scrolling genre of the classic 2D games. The game introduces a lot of familiar gameplay mechanics from old-school Mario side-scrollers while also adding new features. Based on the trailer we saw during the Direct event, the game will offer a new art style, music and new characters. Super Mario Bros Wonder will include Wonder Flowers and Wonder Seeds, which Mario can interact with and drastically change the environment around him. The game, as might expect, will have multiple playable characters including Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princes Peach. Yoshi will make a return as Mario’s side-kick and players can also play Princes Daisy. Nintendo didn’t give a lot of information about Super Mario Bros Wonder, but did promise to reveal more before the game’s October release. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the game – and even fans agree, is the ability of Mario to become an elephant complete with dungarees, moustache and hat.
Super Mario Bros Wonder will cost $60 (or approx Rs 4919). Pre-orders are already open for the game on Nintendo’s official website and major retailers. You can also reserve the physical copy of the game at Best Buy, or secure the digital version at the Nintendo eShop.
Super Mario Bros Wonder is coming to Nintendo Switch on October 20. The game is coming right before the holiday season kicks off in the US, the UK and Europe.
No, Super Mario Bros Wonder is exclusive to the Switch console. Nintendo’s first-party games, be it The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Animal Crossing: New Horizons, can’t be played on any other gaming console.
As per Nintendo’s listing of the game, it will come in a 4.5GB size. There have been many Switch games with far larger install sizes, especially if you compare it with the new Zelda which has a file size of 16GB.
