OpenAI has updated the way it displays subscription prices for ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans in India. While it may look like the company has raised rates, the actual cost for users remains unchanged.
Earlier, Indian ChatGPT users saw prices in US dollars: $20 for Plus and $200 for Pro. However, these were tax-exclusive sticker prices, meaning subscribers paid more once GST was added. For example, a Plus plan effectively cost $23.60 with GST included.
Now, OpenAI lists the subscription prices directly in Indian Rupees, inclusive of GST for individual plans:
ChatGPT Plus: Rs 1,999/month (inclusive of GST) — unchanged from launch on mobile
ChatGPT Pro: Rs 19,900/year (inclusive of GST) — unchanged from launch on mobile
ChatGPT Team: Rs 2,599/month per user (exclusive of GST)
This adjustment makes pricing clearer and consistent with how subscriptions are usually presented in India, but it doesn’t increase what customers actually pay.
When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited India last year, founders and developers had raised concerns about affordability of ChatGPT subscriptions. The company has since been exploring new tiers — including a cheaper Go plan rumored to launch with GPT-5 — but no official rollout has happened yet.
Meanwhile, competition in India is heating up. Perplexity AI is offering one year of free Pro access to Airtel customers, and Google Gemini bundles its AI features with extras like cloud storage and YouTube Premium.
Despite competition, ChatGPT remains the dominant AI chatbot. According to app intelligence firm Appfigures, it has generated over $2 billion in global consumer spending since May 2023. In 2025 alone, its mobile app brought in $1.35 billion, nearly 673% higher than the previous year, averaging almost $193 million per month.
