Sarvesh Anil Kushare became the first-ever Indian man to qualify for the final of the men’s High Jump event at the World Athletics Championships.
He cleared 2.25m in his second attempt at the qualification of the high jump in National Stadium, Tokyo to book his berth in the 13 man final on Tuesday.
It was low mark qualification as no athlete went for the automatic qualification mark of 2.30m. Reigning World Champion Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy failed to clear the 2.25m mark much to shock of the rest of the field.
Another Indian in action, Gulveer Singh finished 16th in the men’s 10000m event clocking 29:13.33. This is best ever finish by an Indian at the 10,000m event at World Championships in terms of placement with Surendra Kumar finishing 19th at the 2009 edition.
Gulveer will be in action on 19th September in the 5000m heats.
The event saw a historic finish as Jimmy Gressier of France broke the African dominance in the event to win the gold medal outpacing Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia by the barest of margins. The French clocked 28:55.77 while Kejelcha clocked 28:55.83. Andreas Almgren of Sweden took the bronze.
