Neeraj Chopra started his defence of his World Championships gold medal in Tokyo, the place where he became an Olympic champion in 2021, with a one-and-done throw that secured him a spot in the final on Thursday. This is be the first time that India will be represented by four athletes in one event at the Worlds Athletics Championships, with Neeraj being joined by Sachin Yadav, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav.
Neeraj and Sachin are placed in Group A while Yash Vir and Rohit are in Group B, which includes Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem. While a Neeraj and Nadeem may only renew their rivalry in the final, Neeraj will be up against some of his most consistent rivals in Group A on Thursday including Germany’s Julian Weber, Czech Republic’s Jakub Valdejch and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott.
What is the qualification standard for the final?
The automatic qualification mark for the final is 84.50m. Any athletes who manages to go past this mark will automatically qualify for the final that will take place on Thursday, September 18. A minimum of 12 best athletes from both groups will feature in the final.

The qualification round for men’s javelin throw, where India’s Neeraj Chopra, Sachin Yadav, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav will be in action, will be held on Day 5 of the World Athletics Championships 2025 on Wednesday, September 17. The event will start at 3:40pm IST.

The 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo is being broadcast on Star Sports Network in India. The event will have dedicated TV coverage for both morning and evening sessions with Star Sports 1 broadcasting the morning session from 4:00 AM to 9:00 AM IST and Star Sports Select 2 broadcasting the evening session from 2:00 PM IST.
