World Athletics Championships 2025 highlights: Neeraj Chopra, Sachin Yadav make it to final; Arshad Nadeem needs 3 throws to qualify

World Athletics Championships 2025: India's Sachin Yadav had the 6th best throw in Group A, and secured a spot in the final by being among the top 12 throwers in qualification.

World Athletics Championships 2025: It was a case of deja vu for Neeraj Chopra! Just like he had qualified for the final of the Tokyo Olympics with a single qualification throw four years ago, he has qualified for the final of the ongoing 2025 World Championships with a single heave in qualifying on Wednesday at the same stadium. Neeraj ended his afternoon in Tokyo with a throw of 84.85m with the automatic qualification mark set at 84.50m. Neeraj was the only thrower out of 19 contenders in Group A to qualify with his first attempt itself.

Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who was competing in Group B, needed three throws to qualify for the final. He managed just 76.99m and 74.17m with his first two attempts. But just when it looked like he would not make the cut, he threw 85.28m with his final attempt to seal a spot in the final.

Neeraj will be joined in the final of the World Championship by Sachin Yadav, who threw a best attempt of 83.67m to secure his qualification as one of the 12 best jumpers on the night. The other two Indians in contention, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav, could not qualify.

The day had seen Neeraj Chopra return to Tokyo — the place where he became a Olympic champion in 2021 — to try and win his third World Athletics Championships medal. With the qualification of the javelin throw event behind him, Neeraj will return to the same venue for the final tomorrow.

Neeraj Chopra was in Group A with German thrower Julian Weber, Jakub Vadlejch and Keshorn Walcott. Reigning Olympic champion from Pakistan, Arshad Nadeem, was Group B, along with Anderson Peters and Julius Yego.

Neeraj Chopra is in Tokyo chasing another piece of silverware for his burgeoning medals cabinet which has an Olympic gold from Tokyo 2021 and an Olympic silver from Paris 2024 besides a World Athletics Championship gold from Budapest 2023 and a Worlds silver from Oregon 2022. 2025 has already Neeraj Chopra breach the elusive 90m mark for the first time, with a throw of 90.23metres at the Doha Diamond League.

WATCH: How Neeraj Chopra entered for World Championship

Here's how Neeraj Chopra walked out for the first step of his World Championship defence on Wednesday. He needed just one throw, which was the first heave of the evening from any of the 37 contenders.

It was an expected anti-climax of sorts: Neeraj's night was over in just five minutes of the action starting.

He will be back tomorrow for the finale, where he will be joined by 11 challengers. All 12 contenders will be chasing the World Championship gold medal, which Neeraj had won two years back at Budapest.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Arshad Nadeem qualifies!

Olympic champ Arshad Nadeem needed all three of his throws to qualify for the javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships. He threw 76.99m and 74.17m with first 2 throws, before throwing 85.28m with his 3rd attempt.

Earlier today, Neeraj Chopra had needed just ne throw of 84.85 to qualify.

The automatic qualification mark is 84.50m, so Neeraj did not need to throw his second and third attempts. But with both Olympic champions qualifying, it sets up a India vs Pakistan clash tomorrow in the final!

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Yash Vir Singh's 2nd throw

Yashvir Singh's second attempt coming up now.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: USA's Curtis Thompson qualifies

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Eye on Indians

Meanwhile, India's Yash Vir Singh had thrown a first attempt of 76.11 metres! He has two more attempts to breach the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m. So does Rohit Yadav, who threw 77.81m with his first attempt.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE:

Anderson Peters what a beast! Throws his season best with a 89.53 metres second throw!

He almost qualified for the final with his first throw, but it was six centimeters short of the automatic qualification mark of 84.5metres with a 84.44m heave.

But with his second attempt, he throws the best throw we have seen in qualification today! 89.53 metres!! Almost broke the 90m mark!

That's one way to lay down a marker!

17:44 (IST) 17 Sep 2025
Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Nadeem on the edge

Olympic champion from Pakistan Arshad Nadeem could miss out on the tomorrow's final! He has one throw left to secure a qualifying spot after managing just 76.99m and 74.17m with his first two attempts. Nadeem is the 27th best thrower right now with one final attempt left!

Only the 12 top throwers make it through even if they do not breach the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: A good first throw from Rohit

Rohit Yadav, the third Indian in action in the javelin throw qualification after Neeraj Chopra and Sachin Yadav, throws 77.81metres with his first attempt.

it's not enough to seal a qualifying spot in the final, but it is better than the Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem's first attempt of 76.99m.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Julius Yego qualifies

Kenyan thrower Julius Yego also needs just one throw to qualify for the final. He nails his first attempt, throwing 85.96m, which secures him a direct spot in tomorrow's final.

There were just three automatic qualifiers from Group A, including Neeraj Chopra. Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch, who threw a season best, was fourth, but not an automatic qualifier.

17:17 (IST) 17 Sep 2025
Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Arshad Nadeem throws!

A woeful first attempt from Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who can manage just 76.99 metres with his first attempt, which means he will need at least one more attempt to try and qualify since the automatic qualification mark is 84.50m.

In case you missed it, Neeraj Chopra's qualification event from Group A earlier had ended just with one single throw of 84.85m.

Arshad's first attempt, meanwhile, is good to only place him 22nd in the overall standings!

The top 12 qualify! So plenty of miles left for the Pakistan thrower today.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Focus on Billy Julio Lopez

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Leaderboard after Group A ends

So the first group of javelin throwers are done for the day and many of them -- including India's Sachin Yadav -- will now anxiously wait for Group B.

Remember the top 12 throwers qualify, even if they don't pass the automatic qualification mark of 84.5m mark.

India's Sachin is currently sixth in the standings, with a best throw of 83.67metres, which means he will be hoping that no more than six throwers better his best from Group B.

There are two more Indians in qualification in Group B, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav. Group B will also see Arshad Nadeem competing.

16:40 (IST) 17 Sep 2025
Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Neeraj Chopra bettered

Two throwers so far have thrown ahead of Neeraj Chopra's best attempt of the day of 84.85m: Julian Weber, who threw 87.21m with his second attempt of the night, and Poland's Dawid Wegner, who threw 85.67m with his third and final attempt of the night. The POlish javelin thrower has his personal best here.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Sachin ends his three throws

So Sachin Yadav's day is over with his third throw also not crossing the automatic qualification mark of 84.5m.

Here are the distances Sachin Yadav's crossed today: 80.16m | 83.67m | 82.63m

He ends as the fifth best thrower in the Group A, now he needs to pray that all the other throwers who have their third throws left, do not better him.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: A glimpse of Neeraj Chopra

In case you missed it, here's Neeraj one-and-done Chopra in action today. His block wasn't the best, he stopped a little awkwardly ahead of the foul line.

But that still doesn't matter. He is the only thrower out of the 19 javelin throwers in Group A who qualifies for the final with a single throw!

Germany's Julian Weber needed two throws to qualify.

Everyone else is having to make at least three throws to try and qualify.

16:25 (IST) 17 Sep 2025

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Eye on Sachin Yadav

Sachin Yadav is the other Indian in the Group A qualification. While Neeraj has exited the arena already, Sachin will need a third throw to secure direct qualification.

Sachin's first two attempts have been 80.16m and 83.67m.

Remember, any thrower who throws over the 84.5m mark AUTOMATICALLY qualifies for the finals. But if a thrower does not qualify directly, there is still hope: the top 12 throwers in terms of best effort are given a spot.

This means that if four throwers qualify directly by throwing over the 84.5m mark, the throwers with the eight next best throws in qualification will also go through.

Sachin now has a final throw of the dice. For now, his best throw of the night is 83.67 metres.

Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Neeraj done and gone!

Neeraj Chopra came, saw, warmed up, threw one qualification throw, and left with not even a sweat drop shed. He just needed some help from a volunteer leaving the stadium where he became an Olympics champion four years ago.

The headline here is: Neeraj is one and done, and now gone! See ya tomorrow in the javelin throw final!

16:14 (IST) 17 Sep 2025
Neeraj Chopra World Athletics Championships 2025 LIVE: Weber qualifies too

The German thrower Julian Weber qualifies for the javelin throw final as well, but needs a second throw to qualify.

His first throw was 82.29m, which was short of the 84.5m automatic qualification mark. But with his second throw of 87.21m, he secures his spot in the final.

For Neeraj Chopra, who is hoping to defend his world title, Weber is the strongest challenger at the world championship along with Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem.

Can Neeraj Chopra stave off Julian Weber challenge at World Championships?

Neeraj Chopra and Julian Weber entered the 90-metre club at the same competition, the Doha Diamond League in May.

Last year’s Paris Olympics marked the first time a European male didn’t win a medal in the javelin throw at the Summer Games. An Asian 1-2, with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem winning gold, India’s Neeraj Chopra silver and the third place going to Grenada’s Anderson Peters. European representation started at fourth-place, Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, followed by Germany’s Julian Weber sixth. Finland’s fall as a javelin powerhouse showed too — a trio from the Nordic country taking the last three top 10 spots.

A year on from the Olympics, the responsibility of a European medal winner will fall on the broad shoulders of Germany’s Julian Weber at the World Championships in Tokyo. The 31-year-old is having the year of his life, entering the 90-metre club and winning the Diamond League Final in Zurich. He’s thrown the spear further than anybody else this year, his 91.51 metres better than Luiz Mauricio da Silva’s 91 metres and Chopra’s 90.23m.
