Argentine superstar Lionel Messi on Sunday night paid a visit to the Camp Nou which is currently undergoing upgradation in order to to expand its capacity. Messi, a Barcelona legend, helped the Catalan club reach unprecedented heights helping it win 10 league titles, four Champions League crowns and three Club World Cups. He left the club in tears at the end of the 2020-21 season because the Blaugrana’s financial issues did not allow the Argentine to sign a new contract.

After that, Messi the went on to play for Paris Saint-Germain in France for two seasons, winning multiple Ligue 1 titles and other domestic accolades. After a two-year stint with the French giants, the Argentine made the surprising decision to join MLS side and David Beckham owned club Inter Miami.

“Last night I returned to a place I miss with my soul. A place where I was immensely happy, where you guys made me feel a thousand times the happiest person in the world. I hope one day I can come back, and not just to say goodbye as a player, as I never got to…,” Messi wrote on his Instagram on Sunday with a picture of him in Camp Nou. “You’re always welcome at your home, Leo,” Barcelona posted on X.

Earlier this year, Messi had said that he was open to returning in Barcelona back in 2023 after his PSG contract expired.

“I had the intention of returning to Barcelona and being able to go back to a place I always wanted to be, but it wasn’t possible again”, Lionel Messi had said in an interview with Simplemente Fútbol. Although Messi refrained from going into the details, a prominent reason could have been Barcelona’s difficult financial situation, which was also a major reason for his departure in the first place.

Adding to the same, Messi said, “After that, it (deciding on a new club) became a family decision. The fact that we won the World Cup also had a big impact. I was clear that I didn’t want to be at another team in Europe, I didn’t want to go to any of them”.
