With piped atmosphere, masks in the dugout, and elbow bumping celebrations, the derby took place under odd circumstances. After a slow start to the match, Erling Haaland broke the deadlock at the half-hour mark by an exquisite tap-in from a Thorgan Hazard cross. 15 minutes later, wingback Raphael Guerreiro doubled the lead with a low finish past Schalke’s goalkeeper Markus Schubert. In the second half, Dortmund maintained their form and grabbed two quick goals from Hazard and Guerreiro to make it 4-0 by the 63rd minute. The Black and Yellow held on to their lead till the end and moved to 54 points from 26 matches.
And after a slow finish to the game, the referee blows the whistle and the match is brought to a close without any injury time. Dortmund are deserved winners with a highly clinical performance, as Haaland scored the opener. Guerreiro scored on either side of Hazard's goal, and helped continue their fine run of form in the league. Schalke's failures in front of goal continue and they would be gutted from today's performance. In the end, Bundesliga is well and truly back. Football is back!

After Schalke's Matondo slaloms his way through the Dortmund defence, he loses the ball to Hummels who has had a brilliant match. Then he lunges in at Hakimi's ankles and gets booked. Meanwhile, Dortmund bring on veteran Marcel Schmelzer and Mario Gotze.
The game has settled somewhat here with both the teams calmed down right now. Still Schalke are looking to find a way to pull one back, and Dortmund sitting comfortably at the back for some time now. It's been a tour-de-force performance from the Black and Yellow and without the likes of Reus, Sancho, Witsel and Can, it shows how strong of a title contender they are.
Jadon Sancho comes on for Thorgan Hazard and the Englishman will have around 15 minutes to terrorise the wounded Schalke defence.
Schalke are trying their best to save their pride a bit, as they get a corner, and from the resulting set-piece Salif Sane just heads the ball over the crossbar. Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki has had almost nothing to do the entire game.
Dortmund's Leonardo Balerdi replaces Delaney, who made his first Bundesliga appearance after six months with an injury. As soon as Delaney goes to the bench, he is given a mask for the bench.
IT'S FOUR! What a brilliant goal by Guerreiro as he finishes with an outrageous outside-of-the-boot left-footed finish from inside of the box, after Haaland finds him after a fine piece of passing move. Schalke are looking out of options now.
After Delaney gets booked, Schalke get an opportunity at goal as the substitute Guido Burgstaller has a pop at goal. He replaced defender Todibo, while Rabbi Matondo replaced Raman at the start of the second half. Can Schalke repeat their epic comeback of 2017?
DORTMUND SCORE AGAIN! Thorgan Hazard wasn't even supposed to start and now he has grabbed a goal and an assist. The front three combine well as Haaland feeds Brandt with the ball, and the former Leverkusen player squared it for the Belgian for Dortmund's third. Schalke's goalkeeper Schubert should have done better.
And the referee blows the whistle for half-time, and without the rapturous cheers and boos it feels kind of surreal. The Dortmund bench did their part though by clapping the boys who produced a brilliant late display in the half and secured a two-goal lead through goals from Erling Haaland and Raphael Guerreiro.
DORTMUND DOUBLES THEIR LEAD! The Portuguese wingback scores his sixth goal of the season after a driving run through Schalke's last line of defence and powered a low daisy-cutter past the legs of goalkeeper Schubert.
On the other hand, fellow title-challengers RB Leipzig are a goal down. A surprise goal in Leipzig as Freiburg's Manuel Gulde backheels in from a corner. Good news for Dortmund overall.
Ever since that goal, Dortmund are in full control now with most recently Guerreiro coming close to doubling the lead after latching onto a cross from Hakimi. Schalke need a bit of a boost from somewhere. On the other hand, the opening goal was Haaland's 10th goal in 9 matches and Hazard's 11th assist of the season.
DORTMUND LEAD! A run, a pass and a goal. What a beauty. Thorgan Hazard finds Erling Haland from the right flank and the Norwegian just flicks the ball home, and he follows it up a somber celebration with teammates just clapping.
Dortmund have a good spell in between though. Hakimi gets a free kick after Hazard was tripped just outside of the penalty box, but nothing was made of it. Next, from a corner... Brandt's ball finds Haaland and the 19-year-old hits the ball hard and low with his left foot, but it's only the side-netting.
The match has been toothless so far, and it was expected. A forced break of two months does have a psychological effect on players... not to mention the physical aspect of it. For Dortmund, they are without Reus and Sancho and their heartbeat Witsel. Schalke, well, have been having troubles of not finding the goal ever since Christmas. It will take time.
Dortmund had a glorious chance a few minutes back, as Hakimi finds himself in a bit of space. But his cross is well defended by Schalke's Todibo. A Barcelona loanee denying a Real Madrid one. Dortmund are trying to attack from their right wing more often than not, while Schalke are relying on digging deep and waiting for a chance to counter-attack.
Apart from a failed Caliguiri free-kick and an off-target shot from the outside of the box by Hazard, no genuine shots on goal with any threat. Ten minutes in, and the match still feels like a warmup fixture as players are clearly not at their 100% after such a lengthy lay-off.
Haaland with the first opportunity of the entire match, after Hakimi plays in from the right flank. But the pace on the ball was too much and the Norwegian starlet couldn't get there in time as Schalke goalkeeper Schubert grabs the ball safely.
Amidst all the echoing, it has been a timid affair so far with Dortmund trying to keep the ball with them by playing between themselves at the back, but they lose possession to Schalke. Everyone still looking rusty out there.
Bundesliga is finally underway after all the new regulations were maintained. The whistle goes and Haaland starts the match.
Dortmund will play with an attacking 3-4-3 with Hummels playing in between Akanji and Piszczeck. Delaney and Dahoud are in the heart of the midfield with Hakimi and Guerreiro as wingback. Haaland will lead the line. Meanwhile, Thorgan Hazard has replaced Reyna.
Schalke will also play with a 3-4-3, with Sane, Nastasic and Todibo at the back. Mckennie and Serdar are in central midfield with Everton-loanee Kenny and Oczipka as wingbacks. The attack is comprised by Harit and Caliguiri behind Raman.
No fans, no problem. The biggest fixture in the Ruhr region is just ten minutes away. The players are training while match officials and staff are checking the pitch with masks on.
Along with the Revierderby, four other matches will kickoff too — RB Leipzig vs Freiburg (7 PM), Hoffenheim vs Hertha Berlin (7 PM), Fortuna Dusseldorf vs Paderborn (7 PM), Augsburg vs Wolfsburg (7 PM). There is a late kickoff too — Eintracht Frankfurt v Borussia Monchengladbach (10 PM).
Although DFL CEO Christian Seifert believes that Bundesliga will be played on probation, the questions are quite real. Will Bundesliga have a new champion for the first time in seven years? “We cannot be complacent now. We all need to listen to the recommendations of the doctors and the politicians. We cannot be more clear about that. But if football can bring a bit of variety to people’s living rooms, then I’ll be happy," said Dortmund's Marco Reus, who believes that the return of the Bundesliga does not mean business as usual.
After a disastrous season last year which saw Schalke in a relegation battle, the story this season has been completely different. David Wagner came in and he has turned them into Europa League hopefuls with some dogged displays. However, after a fantastic start they lost their way and won just once in the eight matches before the league was suspended.
Although Dortmund are without Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho, and Axel Witsel today, they have enough firepower in their team to dismantle Schalke. With a brilliant form (12 points from last five matches) and a solid defence, the often-misfiring Schalke might find it difficult to score. But it remains to be seen how the home team copes with the absence of their famous 'Yellow Wall'.
