The 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony organized by France Football will take place on October 29 (IST) in the French capital city. The 68th edition of the ceremony shall see the best players (male and female) off of a 30-name shortlist.

Started in the year 1956, the Ballon d’Or is the highest individual prize in world football and is being conducted by France Football in collaboration with Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the first time.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi holds the record for winning the prize a total of eight times. Second behind him in the all-time tally is Cristiano Ronaldo (five). Interestingly, this edition marks the first time since 2003 that neither Messi nor Ronaldo have been nominated in the final 30 shortlist.

How is the Ballon d’Or award winner selected?

An international jury of journalists presides over the selection of the winner – one journalist representative per country from the top 100 nations in the latest FIFA rankings (before the lists are published).

Each juror selects a list of ten players from the shortlist of 30 that is chosen by the editorial staff of France Football and French publication L’Équipe, the best juror from the previous edition – Costa Rica for men’s and South Africa for the women’s Ballon d’Or – and UEFA ambaassadors – Luis Figo (men’s) and Nadine Kessler (women’s).

The jurors then award the 10 selected players 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively in descending order of their preference. The Ballon d’Or is ultimately awarded to the player with the highest number of points rewarded by all the jurors.
