Vidarbha cricketer Wasim Jaffer on Wednesday became the first batsman to reach the 11,000 run mark in Ranji Trophy as his side played Baroda in the round three match at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.
After Fazal won the toss and decided to bat first, he and Jaffer combined as Vidarbha posted 268/1 at the end of Day 1. The 40-year old opener is showing no signs of slowing down. In a recent interview to Sportstar, Jaffer had said that a cricketer needs to play in the Indian Super League (ISL) in order to get noticed. “Nowadays, the challenge for the youngsters is to adapt to all three formats. The IPL is also very important to get into the limelight. No matter how much runs you score in Ranji Trophy, if you are not playing the IPL, it is hard to get noticed,” he said.
“It is not like before where you scored 1,000 runs and you are in the reckoning. If you score those many runs, you might only end up playing for India A. But to get into the Indian side, you need a stage like the IPL, where you perform against the best players and get noticed,” he added.
Wasim’s nephew Armaan Jaffer is also in the limelight these days after slamming an unbeaten triple century for Mumbai in their U-23 Col CK Nayudu Tropohy against Saurashtra. The 20-year old returned to action after a gap of 15 months due to injury.
