The graph of Mayank Yadav continues to rise. After rattling Punjab Kings on IPL debut, he hustled and harassed RCB batsmen. Poor Cameron Green—his bad day getting worse—an utter brute devoured him. He not only bowled faster that light,  but produced a shade of inward movement from hard length. Green just thrust his bat in hope more than anything else, and ended up playing down the wrong line. At this pace, batsmen tend to play him off the back-foot, allowing the extra split second to judge the length. But it is doubtful whether it helped Green—at his pace, which is 150kph, a batsman has approximately 0.4 seconds to judge the line, the length, decide on a shot and play it—who looked as pale as a ghost as he walked back. It might have taken him a few replays to figure out exactly what just happened to the ball that was just coming towards them. The impetus on the ball was such that it sped to the fence after disarraying the stumps. But it was not pace alone—but stifling precision and length—that make Mayank a special talent.

Yash Thakur in the attack now and Rawat gets rapped in the gloves but gets no run. Follows it up with a swing but misses for another dot. Finally gets off the mark with a single. Patidar on strike and he finally gives the crowd something to cheer about with a six!!! 8 from the over. Need 111 runs

Mayank in to bowl the 10th over and starts with a wide. Rawat manages to get a bat to the next delivery and gets 2 runs. A dot next before Rawat takes another single. Great over. Just 3 from it. Need 119 runs

Mayank Yadav had a debut to remember for the Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday as he scalped three wickets against the Punjab Kings in his four overs.

But more importantly, the LSG debutant bowled a 155.8 kmph scorcher against the PBKS, which is now the fastest ball of IPL 2024. Mayank bowled the ball to Punjab’s captain Shikhar Dhawan, who was batting on 59 at the time. PBKS were comfortably placed at the time, with the score reading 101/0 off 11 overs as they chased a target of 22 runs.

Jonny Bairstow, a wrecker of pace bowling all around the world, was in for a shock on Saturday night when he shaped to pull a back-of-length delivery from the debutant Mayank Yadav as it rushed at him in a blur. It resulted in a dolly of a catch and the subsequent wickets with bouncers in a sensational spell of 3/27, that included one at 155.8 kmph, against Punjab Kings warmed the hearts of Mayank’s father Prabhu Yadav. It took him back to a pivotal moment when Mayank was 14 and when he, a fan of the West Indian pace legend Curtly Ambrose, planted a seed in his son.

Yadav sr. was returning from his factory, where they make sirens for ambulances and police vehicles, when he stopped at Sonnet Club at the Venkateshwara college in Delhi to watch Mayank bowl. Siddharth back in the attack and Faf with a single to start this one off. A dot follows before Kohli takes a single to rotate strike. In the aiiirrr next and that has just fallen short of Bishnoi. Faf takes a 2 and rubs ssalt into LSG wounds with a straight boundary!! Another boundary next to end the over!! 12 from it. Need 157 runs

Spin from both ends now and Krunal Pandya is brought in the atatck. Kohli takes 2 off his first before deposting him out of the ground for a four!! 2 more from the next two balls as Pandya ramps up the speed with a couple of quicks before ending the over with a slower delivery . 10 from this one. Welcome back to the chase and Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis are in the middle to start for RCB. Siddarth, who has been subbed for QDK, will open the attack. A single off the second ball to start this one off. Faf returns the favour with a single of his own. Good firstt over for LSG. Just 3 from it. Need 179 runs 

Siraj has bee n handed the ball for the last over. Excellent start with back to back 3 dots. Pooran finally latches on the 4th delivery for a six!! And again!!! Pulls for six more and that has sailed to the top tier!! And the innings ends with a single. LSG post 181/5 after 20 overs against RCB

Tople vto bowl the penultimate over of the innings and Pooran is making RCB pay for that dropped chance. Starts with 2 flat sixes before the third one is smashed on top of the roof!!! That's a 106-m long overboundary!! 20 from the over

Yash Dayal on to bowl the 18th over and LSG need some big hits to get to a par score. RCB couldn't beat KKR with 180+ last time they played in this ground. Pooran understands the assignment and smashes Dayal for a boundary off the very first ball. Just 3 runs from the next 4 balls. Badoni tries to play the last ball a little bit late and he has been caught out by Faf du Plessis. Badoni's lean patch continues.

Yash Dayal to bowl the 15th and starts with back to back dots. These are like gold dust in this match. 2 singles from the next two balls now. A wide next as Anuj Rawat thinks it's out. And there's  a check for a wide ball. It's a fair delivery, the third umpire reckons so the review is retained. Brilliant over. Just 2 off it.

Maxwell will bowl out with this over and Stoinis has smashed his fellow countryman with a six to start!! 2 runs from the next four balls as Maxwell pulls the score back before snapping up Stoinis. The batter goes for a big hit but can just find the palms of Mayank Dagar.

Mayank Dagar back in the atatck and QDK mistimes his hit and it falls in no man's land. He looked exasperated with that shot but he's safe for the time being. Back to back singles next as the scoreboard is kept ticking. QDK on strike again and he has hit the next ball straight down the ground for a boundary!! That's his 50!! Goes down the ground again and clears the rope for a six!! 12 from the over

RCB bring on Cameron Green now and his fellow Aussie Stoinis is on strike. Not a great delivery to begin as Stoinis flicks the ball aimed at his pads and gets a boundary!! Absolute gift, that is. Another flick off the third but this time a fielder is stationed near that boundary so that's kept down to just a single. QDK on strike and gets beaten off the ensuing ball. After that loose delivery off the first ball, it's turning out to be a pretty decent over by the Aussie allrounder. 6 from the over

Mayank Dagar introduced and starts witha  wide that has gone past everyone and into the ropes for 4 runs. de Kock takes a single next and new man Stoinis will face the next ball. He takes a single and gets off the mark off his first ball. Great bit of fielding from Dinesh Karthik next as he keeps the next delivery to just a single. 11 from this over 

Siraj steams in for his second over and Padikkal pokes it on the onside to get a single. QDK in strike and he swings at thin air as the ball beats him. The run rate has dropped drastically after QDK's initial flurry. And just as i was typing this, the South African has smashed Siraj for another six!! His 3rd off the bowler. Back to back wides from Siraj next as the pressure mounts on him. Make it 3 wides as Faf has a bit of talk with the bowler. And Padikkal is gone the next ball as he goes for a big swing, gets the top edge and keeper Anuj Rawat runs a fair bit of distance to get a hold of it!!

KL Rahul is still feeling his way back to competitive cricket. His 14-ball 20 was typical of someone who is still reacquainting with the tenor of the game. He was not scratchy but not fluent either. The first 10 balls bore him just six runs. Then he struck a pair of sixes. The first six was a pearler, swinging the left-handed Yash Dayal from around the stumps over his head with terrific bat speed. More than his timing, it was his power that stood out. Followed a swept-six of Glenn Maxwell, again it was raw force that stood out. Then like most batsmen on comeback trying too hard to make an impact, he tried to slog-sweep, a bit too hard, and ended up horribly miscuing it. He was gutted, and as he walked back he shadow-batted a straight drive. Perhaps a straight-batted stroke could have yielded a better result. But his muscle memory is just kicking back to full life. It’s a Quinton de Kock special, the pick-up short behind square-leg off good-length balls. He shapes for the flick, shifts slightly across, lowers his body a bit to stabilise his base and then whips the ball with a brisk swirl of his wrists, a blend of violence and timing. The Mohammed Siraj delivery had just marginally erred in length, the line was not too awry either, but de Kock judged the length perfectly and was ready for the stroke. The stroke delighted him too, as he flashed a smile, coming as this from a batsman thrifty with his expression. Huge shout for an LWB next but RCB decides against reviewing it. Just as well, looked like there might have been an inside edge. 3 from the over

Topley back in the attack and there's a chance to get rid of QDK. he hits a mistimed shot, Maxwell backpedals and it's just out of reach for the lanky Australian!! How costly might that be? Just a single from the next two deliveries as Padikkal was  beaten comprehensively. Tody over. Just 5 from it  

Maxwell will bowl the last over of the powerplay and de Kock starts with a single. Rahul goes for a sweep shot next and it just kisses the palms of Rajat Patidar and it's over the topes for a six!! The next ball, he is gone!!! Into the deck and Rahul swings his bat, doesn't get the timing and it's straight up into the night sky and is ultimately taken by Mayank Dagar.

Change of pace next and de Kock tries to pull but gets the outside edge of the bat and it's hit into the ground. Rahul on strike now and he has hit the 5th ball over the bowler's head with a huge six!!! As easy as it gets. Goes gain, does not get enough and the ball falls just outside the long on boundary and the fielders can send it back. 10 from the over

Spin introduced now with Maxwell and he starts with a wide to KL Rahul. The LSG skipper takes a single next and the dangerous QDK on strike again. He defends and gets a single off his own as Rahul gets back on strike. A dot ball and that brings a huge cheer from the crowd. Yes, it has been THAT sort of a match. A calmer over between the storm. Just 4 from it.

Mohammed Siraj in to bowl the third over and he almost gets a wicket from the first delivery as Rahul's outer edge just misses the bat. He takes a single and QDK on strike. Good fourth ball as it surprised the South African who gets a thick edge but the ball lands just in front of the bowler. And he makes up for it the next ball, as de Kock smashes the ensuing ball over fine leg for a six!! Follows that up with another six which is dumped over deep square leg. Dot to end. 13 from this over

Yash Dayal introduced in the attack now and Rahul gets a good bat to the first delivery but a leaping Virat Kohli prevents a sureshot boundary. Starts with a defensive shot and then an outswinger to de Kock who swings and just gets thin air. The third ball is short, de Kock pulls and it's over the keeper's head for a 4!!! Faf du Plessis: We are going to chase. The previous game we played on here first innings it was slower. Some places it is patchy and dry. It really important to find some answers. We have had some really good conversations. It would be good if you keep learning from the mistakes. There is a touch of moisture and let's see how it goes. Topley comes in for Alzarri.

KL Rahul: It is a bit different. Been used to coming here and walking into the home dressing room, bit different when I walk into the visiting dressing room. We have showed character in both games. Everyone is chipping in and that gives you a lot of confidence, we need to keep doing that and keep getting better. Some of the guys have gotten better with their skills since season one, the combination is coming well as a team. Now we need to put some runs on the board and put pressure on the oppositon. More than the victory everyone was talking about Mayank's pace, he has been with us since the first season and was unlucky to miss out last season with injury.

So KL Rahul is back as Lucknow's captain. 

But it's Faf du Plessis who wins the toss and opts to field first.

Pitch number 7 which was used for the first game against Punjab Kings - 175 was the score. Average first innings score over here in the last few years has gone up to 196. What I have seen straightaway on this pitch is that it's very dry. I think there will be spin, especially for Glenn Maxwell. We saw the other night (RCB vs PBKS), Glenn Maxwell was getting turn. Both spinners for RCB were getting turn - the left-armer and the off-spinner. This pitch is very dry. It's the highest turning ground on average this year in the IPL. This area outside the off-stump for the right-handed batsmen, this is the sort of area that Maxwell will be looking to pitch the ball. It's almost like a riverbed, very dry, a lot of these cracks don't move but right next to these cracks, there's a little bit of grass as well. The ball will behave differently whether it pitches on the brown bit or the green. It may be slightly two-paced. The odd ball turns, the odd ball goes straight. A very good pitch for bowling spin, reckon Murali Karthik and Graeme Swann. 

The right-hander had bowled a fiery first over already, but he’d start the second with a 155.8kph delivery – the fastest of the season so far. In that over, he removed Bairstow with a short-of-length delivery that hurried on. In his third over, he bowled another quick short ball that hit Prabhsimran Singh high on the bat. He welcomed Jitesh Sharma with two sensational short ones. Perfume balls, as they are called with the batter able to smell the leather. In his final over, he removed Prabhsimran with a similar delivery.

Morne Morkel revealed later that Mayank had to miss the entirety of the last IPL season after an injury in the warmup matches. Former pacer Brett Lee would tweet: ‘India has just found its fastest bowler … very impressive’. As Dhawan put it, “Mayank outsmarted us”. ”That’s the story of the night, eh? He has been through a lot in terms of injuries. It wasn’t just about bowling fast, he was accurate as well,” Nicholas Pooran added. (Read more)

After just the one game in-charge, KL Rahul was dropped as Lucknow's captain against Punjab Kings last weekend and substituted following his batting in the first knock. It was Nicholas Pooran, who took over as captain in his stead, leading the team to their first win of the season. Reports coming from the Chinnaswamy suggest that Rahul didn't practice any keeping drills on the eve of the game and it is likely that Lucknow keep him solely for his role as a batter using the Impact Player rule depending on the outcome of the toss.

The pitch, same strip as was used for the game against Punjab Kings, wore a distinct tinge of green on the eve of the match. In the couple of games played so far at the ground in this season, the pace bowlers were forced to resort to cutters to find some purchase. That prospect could see a change if the pitch plays as quick as it seems from the outside.

The Mumbai Police deployed cops in civil clothes at the MCA pavilion, the place Mumbai Indians dug out is, as a precautionary measure on Monday before the match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals at Wankhede.

The crowd, who cheered former skipper Rohit Sharma and screamed ‘Mumbai ka Raja kaun? Rohit Sharma’, had booed Pandya when he had entered Wankhede to warm up before the commencement of the toss. (Read Devendra Pandey's report for the venue)

It was a night of disappointment for Mumbai Indians batsmen as they imploded on a red-soil pitch with some assistance to seam and some bounce for spinners before a composed Riyan Parag ensured Rajasthan Royals cantered to a win. (Read last night's report from Sriram Veera here)
