India equalled the record for the lowest total successfully defended in T20 World Cup history against Pakistan in a six-run win at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in Pakistan.
After being sent into bat, India were bundled for 119 in 19 overs by a sharp Pakistani bowling attack. It was India’s lowest T20I score against Pakistan and the first time they were bundled out by Pakistan in 12 T20I matches since 2007.
In reply, Pakistan were off to a positive start before India pulled things back with defensive bowling and late wickets. Led by Jasprit Bumrah’s incisive 3/14 in four overs, including a brilliant 19th over conceding only three runs, India left Pakistan with 18 to get in the final. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh only gave away 11 runs bowling the 20th over to record a nervy win and India’s second on the trot.
Consequently, India equalled Sri Lanka’s record for the lowest successful defended total. Sri Lanka had successfully defended their 119-run target in the 2014 World Cup, bundling the Kiwis for 60.
The is the first time India defended a T20I total under 120. The lowest score previously defended by India in T20Is was 138 against Zimbabwe in 2016. In T20 World Cups, India’s best defence was a 146-run total against Bangladesh in 2016.
