Mohammed Shami became the second India bowler to take a World Cup hat-trick after Chetan’s Sharma feat in 1987. In a remarkable display of skill and control, Shami held his nerves to defend 16 runs in the final over of India’s match against Afghanistan during the World cup 2019 on June 22.

Shami’s first ball was hit for a boundary by Mohammad Nabi making India nervous. But the pacer followed it with a dot ball and dismissed Nabi, Aftab Alam, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in successive deliveries (two of them lethal yorkers) to guide India to their fourth victory in the tournament.

Shami finished his sensational spell with 4 wickets for 40 runs off 9.5 overs.

Chetan Sharma’s accomplishment was during India’s match against New Zealand in the 1987 edition of the quadrennial event.
