This was Gukesh’s first game after becoming the youngest world champion in the history of chess. Elsewhere, Leon Luke Mendonca lost to Gukesh’s other second from the World Championship, Vincent Keymer, after forcing the German GM in trouble in the middle game.

In another game, Praggnanandhaa was in deep trouble on the clock and on the board against Nodirbek Abdusattorov, before the Uzbek grandmaster erred and allowed the Indian to get out of jail. The game ended in a draw.

How Gukesh won 1st game as chess world champion after finding lucky escape route vs Anish Giri

Just when checkmate seemed inevitable, with Gukesh running out of options — and out of time on the clock to think — Anish Giri made a blunder that will haunt the attic of his mind for years to come.

In one hasty move of the wrist, Anish Giri had handed his 18-year-old opponent a get-out-of-jail-free card. Gukesh, who won the world championship last month on a similar blunder from his opponent Ding Liren, is not one to refuse gifts across the board.

So Anish Giri has yielded to temptation and played the move that Gukesh was angling for when the world champion played 14. Bh4. Anish responded with a 14... g5, trapping Gukesh's bishop with his g pawn. But in the process he has left his king exposed.

Gukesh slickly plays 15. Nxg5

What follows is a 15... hxg5 16. Bxg5.

Anish has used up most of his significant time advantage as he contemplates his 16th move. And while he has a knight more on the board, he is down two pawns. Plus, his king is vulnerable.

Who says chess players are always serious? A new ad featuring the youngest world champion in chess history, Gukesh, and five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand portrays the trailblazing chess duo from India in a funny light.

In the ad, Anand tells Gukesh that he needs his help to connect with Gen Z kids and learn the lingo.

“Sir nobody can teach this especially at your age,” says Gukesh in the video before correcting himself quickly “… at your stature, I meant. The thing is you need to know pop culture!”

At this, Anand jumps to his feet and poses like Michael Jackson and says “I know Michael Jackson.”
