The inspiration for this quiz came from a book about the dead.
No shady business, dear reader. I’m talking about The Devil’s Atlas, Edward Brooke-Hitching’s wonderful work on the afterlife. The timing was apt — I was heading to Kolkata for Durga Pujo, already musing over stories of the goddess’ victories. The Atlas, thus, became my in-flight read, as we sailed through ideas of morality and justice across various cultures.
Truth be told, it’s one of those books that gets you a little uncomfortable. I’m not one to dismiss strange trains of thought, and eventually found myself down a Wikipedia rabbit hole at 3am. This culture quiz is the result of that experience, captured in 14 questions on the theme of light and darkness — something that comes to the forefront at Dussehra and Durga Puja every year.
