ITR Filing FY 2024-25 Last Date Extension: Last night, the Income Tax Department announced a one-day extension for the deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 on X (formerly Twitter).
This decision comes in response to multiple complaints regarding glitches in the income tax portal, which have been raised by several taxpayers, tax professionals, and chartered accountants over the past few days.
Despite it, the I-T Department recorded over 7.3 crore returns filed for ITR FY 2024-25, AY 2025-26, by 15 September this year, surpassing the 7.28 crore returns filed by the deadline of 31 July last year.
While the deadline for filing ITRs was originally set for 31 July 2025, it was later extended to Tuesday, 16 September 2025, due to “structural and content revisions” in the income tax return (ITR) forms, which were notified in late April and early May.
However, the due date for the belated Income Tax Return (ITR) remained the same as Wednesday, 31st December 2025; however, it will incur several penalties.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has announced the extension of the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from Monday, September 15, to today, September 16, 2025 (Tuesday).
The deadline got extended as several complaints were raised about glitches in the income tax portal, including late deadlines, abrupt logins, and difficulty generating challans by taxpayers, professionals, and accountants on social media platform X.
They have also reported issues with self-assessment, filing returns, and displaying expired sessions.
