Grandparents play a significant role in the lives of their grandchildren, offering a unique and valuable bond that enhances their upbringing. The importance of grandparents in a child’s life can be highlighted in several ways.

Actor Soha Ali Khan recently took the Instagram to share “the most unconditional love” between her mother Sharmila Tagore and daughter Inaaya. “Time with grandparents is so precious ❤️ the chance to learn from someone so far apart in years from you (and this works both ways), a second chance at parenting, the most unconditional love and the purest fun – and a chance for me to put my feet up and finally get that pedicure!!” the caption read.

The role of grandparents in a child’s life

Grandparents serve as a bridge between generations, passing on the family traditions, values, and cultural heritage to their grandchildren. They provide a link to the past–sharing stories, experiences and wisdom that enrich the lives of the children. This cross-generational connection fosters a deeper understanding of family roots in the children which helps for strengthening family bonds.

Moreover, grandparents often try to spend time with their grandchildren, whenever possible. The activities that they engage in like reading, storytelling or gardening, not only help to create long-lasting memories but also enhance the child’s intellectual, creative and social development.

They also act as role models, imparting life lessons and guidance based on their own experiences to their grandchildren. They offer a different perspective and alternative sources of advice, helping children navigate challenges and make informed decisions.

In an interview with indianexpress.com, Vishnu Priya Bhagirath, a psychologist said, “The absence of grandparents in a child’s life can potentially have a negative impact on their development, particularly in certain situations or circumstances. When grandparents are absent, children may miss out on the emotional support, unconditional love, and guidance they provide. This absence can create a void in the child’s life, potentially leading to feelings of loneliness, insecurity or a lack of belonging.”

Additionally, she said that the absence of intergenerational connections may limit the child’s exposure to cultural heritage, family traditions and the sense of continuity that grandparents bring. “A close relationship with grandparents brings numerous benefits to grandchildren, fostering their holistic development and well-being,” she informed.

How to manage conflicts between parent and grandparent

Bhagirath explained that it is important for grandparents to recognise the significance of their presence and the unique contributions they can make. “Grandparents act as living links to the past, offering valuable insights into societal changes and personal growth. But one common source of tension is differing parenting styles and expectations between grandparents and parents. It can be solved through effective communication and respectful dialogue, which is vital in navigating these differences, ensuring open discussions and shared understandings of boundaries and roles.”

Additionally, conflicts may emerge due to generational gaps or lifestyle disparities, where conflicting views on technology, cultural norms or values may arise. During such instances encouraging open-mindedness and acknowledging diverse perspectives can bridge these gaps and facilitate mutual respect.”

Concluding, she noted that grandparents serve as mentors, sharing their life experiences and offering valuable guidance, which helps children develop resilience and navigate life’s challenges.
