Shortly after Binoy Bhushan Das was sworn in as the Protem Speaker of the Tripura Assembly by Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya in Agartala Wednesday, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhoumik resigned from the Assembly to retain her Lok Sabha seat.

Bhoumik had won from the Dhanpur Assembly constituency in the Sepahijala district with a margin of 3,500 votes.

Speaking to reporters after her resignation, Bhoumik said: “I hold membership in both places (Parliament and Assembly). The party advised me to contest from Dhanpur. As per the instruction of the party, I have now resigned from the Dhanpur constituency. I thank the voters who voted for me. I assure you that all promises made for the development of Dhanpur would be fulfilled.”

Earlier, there were speculations that Bhoumik could become the first woman chief minister of the state. But the BJP decided to retain Dr Manik Saha as the chief minister.

BJP leaders have declined to comment on the next possible party candidate in Dhanpur.

Meanwhile, sources said that ruling BJP and IPFT MLAs will be administered the oath of office Thursday while CPI(M), Congress, and TIPRA Motha MLAs will be sworn in at the Speaker’s Chamber Friday.
