A constable with the Tripura Police was arrested after he was allegedly found inebriated and misbehaved with a judge at the Bishalgarh District and Sessions Court on Saturday. He was released later.
The police personnel, identified as Rupanta Dangu who is posted at the office of the Superintendent of Police in Sepahijala district, went to the court on Saturday to appear as a witness in a murder case that dates back to 2017. After he was called to the witness stand, the judge took offence at his purported misdemeanour and accused the constable of being intoxicated and misbehaving with him.
However, the constable said he did not misbehave with any judge. “I came here as a witness in a case. I was not intoxicated… I had just taken ‘khaini’. But I did not misbehave with anyone,” Dangu said.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, a senior officer with the state police explained that the errant constable was suffering from psychological issues and alcoholism for some time and was even treated at the Naraingarh psychiatric hospital in West Tripura district. “The constable was handed over to the local police station. A fine was imposed on him by the court, which he later paid and was released,” the officer informed.
In November last year, a sub-inspector of Teliamura police station was arrested allegedly for disorderly behaviour under the influence of alcohol.
