Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has said the BJP-led government is “the most media-friendly” and has taken several steps for the welfare of journalists.

“The state government believes in the freedom of media. The state government is the most media-friendly. We have taken several steps for the welfare of the media and mediapersons. Our policy will continue to be reflected in future as well,” Saha said at the inaugural session of a four-day media workshop-cum-orientation programme at the Agartala Press Club on Wednesday.

Saha said that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy and requires freedom of speech, without which people will not get the right information. The media has a vital role in the transformation of the society and acts like a sentry for conservation of democracy, he said.

“I hope this kind of workshop will enhance the performance of mediapersons,” he said.

The workshop was organised by the information and cultural affairs department in association with the press club.

Information and cultural affairs department secretary P K Chakraborty said, “This kind of workshop is the need of the hour in this technology age. It will help in understanding news, features etc. Media also has a role in dissemination of information regarding policy and guidelines of the state government to the people.”

He listed increased pensions, an insurance scheme and the modified advertisement policy among the initiatives that the state government has taken for the welfare of journalists.
