Seven Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in two incidents in Tripura for illegally staying in India, police said on Wednesday. An alleged Indian human trafficker who helped four of the Bangladeshis was also arrested along with them.
In the first case, three Bangladeshi nationals including one minor were arrested at Kailashahar in Unakoti district late on Monday night. They were produced before a local court on Tuesday.
The Irani police, based on secret information, raided a house at Kalerkandi and found the Bangladeshi family of three there. In the preliminary investigation, it was found that they had been staying in Gujarat and were about to go to Bangladesh again.
“We arrested and booked them under the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act. They planned to go to Bangladesh via Tripura. They came to India illegally and went to Gujarat, where they stayed for two and a half years,” said an officer from the Irani police station.
In the second incident, four Bangladeshi nationals and an Indian man were arrested at Boxanagar in Sepahijala district.
The arrested Bangladeshis claimed they had given Rs 7,500 each to the Indian man to help them cross the international border.
While arrests of illegal immigrants have been rather common in Tripura, a series of arrests of Bangladeshi nationals who illegally crossed the India-Bangladesh border have been made in recent months, especially since the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in Dhaka fell last year.
As per the Tripura police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya people and two Nigerians were arrested between January 1, 2024 and February 28, 2025. As many as 483 of these arrests were made after August 5, 2024, when the Hasina government fell.
Tripura shares an 856-km-long border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced due to local disputes.
