A pregnant woman died after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband in Rahimpur under the Kalamchoura police station of Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Somaiya Akter, 19.

The mother of the deceased said Akter was four months pregnant at the time of her death and added that her daughter had a love marriage with Riyad Hossain, 26. She alleged that after their marriage, Hossain had become addicted to gambling and intoxicants, resulting in frequent arguments between the couple.

On Sunday, Hossain allegedly kicked Akter on the abdomen after a quarrel over his habit of gambling. Following this, the victim collapsed and was declared dead when taken to a local health centre.

Following Akter’s death, a case was lodged at Kalamchoura police station under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The body of the deceased was sent for post-mortem at the Boxanagar health centre.

The accused is currently absconding.
