A district and sessions judge in Tripura sentenced a man from Unakoti district to life imprisonment on Thursday for murdering his wife in an inebriated condition.
The court held that Rakhel Munda, who lived in Bhuiyapara village under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, had killed his wife Mani Munda last year. “The court found him guilty of murdering his wife and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000, failing which additional three months of imprisonment would be imposed,” Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb said.
According to the prosecution, Rakhel was an alcoholic and used to assault his wife frequently. On June 19 last year, he went home drunk around 10.30 pm and quarrelled with his wife. He hit on her head with a piece on wood and she suffered severe haemorrhaging and died on the spot.
Rakhel later went to his daughter’s home nearby and told her what he had done. He also informed several of his neighbours, one of whom filed a murder complaint against him at the Kailashahar police station.
According to the police, Rakhel confessed to the crime after his arrest. Sixteen people gave their testimonies during the trial in the court of District and Sessions Judge P Kumar.
