Ahead of the Tripura Assembly bypolls, the Sepahijala district election officer has directed that the India-Bangladesh border near Sonamura be sealed to prohibit movement of people from both sides.

The border will remain sealed from 7 am on September 3 till the polling gets over on September 5 in the Boxanagar and Dhanpur constituencies in Sepahijala district. The restrictions will not apply to Border Security Force and other security personnel as well as government officials.

Of the total 93,234 voters, 43,087 are in Boxanagar and 50,147 in Dhanpur. The votes will be counted on September 8.

The death of Boxanagar MLA Samsul Haque, a veteran CPM leader, and the resignation of Pratima Bhoumik as Dhanpur MLA have necessitated the bypolls. Bhoumik resigned to become a Union minister of state.

The ruling BJP and the CPM have put up their candidates for the bypolls, while the Congress and the TIPRA Motha have not. They are yet to decide whether to support the CPM.
