Hours before the Indian flag was unfurled on the 77th Independence Day on Tuesday, the Congress raised allegations of vandalism and arson at one of its party offices in Tripura and claimed BJP-back goons are behind the attack. The party also said that the portraits of freedom fighters and the national flag were vandalised.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said a complaint has been filed at the local police station at Bagma. The officer added that the complainants have held purported BJP-backed miscreants responsible for the incident and said a case is being registered on the issue.
Speaking to the media, Gomati district Congress president Titan Paul said a group of miscreants entered the block office of Congress at Bagma late on Monday night and allegedly set several items in the office on fire. “We had prepared ourselves to observe Independence Day but a group of miscreants vandalised our office,” he said.
The Congress leader added, “…those who observe Amrit Mahotsava, set the national tricolour on fire.” Paul also said the office was attacked three times in the past.
“We demand the Chief Minister, who is also the Home Minister of the state, to identify and arrest those involved in the incident immediately and take strict action,” Paul said.
He also warned that the district Congress and the youth Congress would launch a widespread movement unless steps are taken to arrest the miscreants.
