The Reang community in Tripura, one of the 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in the country, would be provided housing with basic facilities under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN) which was announced last month.

Speaking to the media, PVTG Minister Suklacharan Noatia Friday said, “The central cabinet has approved the PM JANMAN mission which focuses on 11 critical interventions to be undertaken by 11 key departments at a budget of Rs 24,000 crore. This mission will help uplift the Reang communities of our state.”

He added that of the total amount, Rs 15,336 crore and a separate Rs 8,768 crore would be sanctioned under the Development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups in Scheduled Areas (DAPST) Mission from 2023-24 till 2025-26.

The PM JANMAN mission was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in Jharkhand to extend support for the development of the 75 PVTGs.

The mission focuses on a total of 11 critical interventions, including permanent housing, piped water facilities, power connections, mobile tower sets, mobile medical units, road connectivity, anganwadi centres, construction of hostels, Dhan Vikas Kendras and construction of multi-purpose centres. A countrywide awareness campaign has been planned to spread the word about the mission and its benefits.

“Enrollment for Aadhaar, Ayushman and Kisan credit cards and health check-ups would be done through the camps,” said Noatia.

While Tripura has its own population of PVTGs, especially Reangs, the state is currently in the process of permanently settling over 30,000 Reang migrants from Mizoram, who fled the state during the ethnic tension in 1997 and took shelter in adjoining villages of North Tripura district. Nearly 2.5 decades later, the central government, state governments of Tripura, Mizoram and the Reang migrant leaders signed a quadripartite agreement in 2020; the process is currently underway.
