United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) chief Paresh Barua’s nephew has joined the outfit, Assam Police said Sunday. “Munna Barua has joined the ULFA (I) and has proceeded to Myanmar. He is the son of the elder brother of Paresh Barua. He was doing his apprenticeship at the Indian Oil Corporation refinery in Digboi and went missing around a week back,” Assam Police DGP (Special Branch) Pallab Bhattacharyya told The Indian Express over the phone.

A source close to the family said that Munna, 24, was trained at the ITI in Dibrugarh and that the family is tense and yet to accept that their son has left to join the banned group.

Munna’s joining ULFA-I comes after Pankaj Pratim Dutta, a local leader of the All Assam Student Union in Golaghat district, went missing and joined the outfit.
